Date: 27 Feb 2010
Location: Stoney Cove, Sapcote Road, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, LE9 4DW
Organiser – Graham
Cost: £15 (non-members) or £10 for holders of a diverlog membership
Open to: Qualified divers only, this is not a training day but there may be the opportunity for depth progression.
The main aim of this day as a fun dive day; but as this site is an ideal opportunity for members wishing to complete some depth progression (instructor numbers allowing), there may be the chance to further your range and have a deeper dive added to your log book! (if you’re interested in going a little deeper then you will need to arrange this with an instructor), remember to stay within your limits and enjoy the day.
The Dive: Stony Cove has long been known as the "National Dive Centre" (not to be confused with The National Diving & Activity Centre is based in Chepstow) and was originally a quarry supplying granite to the road and building industries up until the late 1950's, once the quarry operations ceased it was left to fill with water from a local spring and developed into the ideal place for diving and for a time was used to train divers to work off-shore and perform various duties underwater. The site has a range of depths from 7 meters all the way to 36 meters so it's safe to say there is something for everyone, just to help keep you all interested there are a few things to see in there too. You can find items ranging from the obligatory car all the way through to a plane; helicopter and a number of wrecks to dive on. There is also the "Hydro-box" for the deeper divers amongst us; worth a visit if you’re looking to add a deeper dive to your books (again remember to check with our instructors if you would like to do this, there may not be enough instructors to take everyone).
Opening times: 7:00am to 3:00pm (it's about 2.5 hrs ish to get there so if we aim to arrive at 8:30 to 9:00am ish we should get a decent day in there)
Additional Details: The water WILL be cold so think carefully about your choice of undersuit and surface clothing (surface temps are around 5 deg C and 3 deg C in the water), I would advise you take a torch and ensure your kit is ready for a cold water dip, due to the cold and early morning start we will be taking the club O2 kits just in case (remember that cold water and fatigue are conducive to DCI so bear this in mind). For those wishing to go deeper (if instructor numbers and availability allow) remember a good night’s sleep / good hydration and appropriate kit will be required.
Refreshments: there is an on-site cafe, you will find nice food and a warm drink from Nemo's bar diner so make sure you bring enough money to keep you fed and watered for the day (or bring a big flask and butties).
There are good facilities available on site and air fills available and a well stocked dive shop for those needing to buy a new toy or two.
Travel arrangements: We can either all meet there or meet at a services somewhere along the way, what would you prefer?
If your interested you can register at the bottom of this page or by adding your name on the forum, if you need any mode details feel free to contact me.
Cheers
